News in Brief - February 2005
Mozart Concert
The S James Singers visited S Matthew’s on 11th December to sing the Mozart Requiem and other pieces by the composer. There was a very good audience and it was a joy to hear the building resounding to such glorious music. There will be more of this during 2005.
Requiem for the victims of the Tidal Wave
On Monday, 3rd January, we sung a High Mass of Requiem for the victims of the Tidal Wave around the Indian Ocean. It was good for the strong congregation to welcome a number of visitors and the collection at the Mass raised £270.
Farewell visit by the Archdeacon of Northumberland and Mrs Elliott
It was a real pleasure to welcome Father and Mrs Elliott to S Matthew’s on the Fr Elliott’s last parochial Sunday as Archdeacon of Northumberland. He sung the Mass as if he had been doing it every week and the splendid lunch that followed in the Vicarage was quite something to behold. The Elliotts have written to thank us all for the day and the tokens of our esteem.
The Sacristy Roof
After a while of irksome dilapidation, the sacristy roof has now been repaired and the room is much more comfortable than it was. Thanks are due to Jimmy Sharman for the excellent job he has made of restoring the interior. We now have to wait for the stone and brickwork to dry before we can redecorate.
